How Much Does Custom Software Development Cost in India? A 2026 Breakdown by Project Type

Explore the cost of custom software development in India in 2026, with a breakdown of pricing by project type, complexity, and features. Discover the key factors affecting development costs and learn how to plan your software budget effectively.

Modern Software Architecture on Screen

Ask five agencies what custom software costs and you'll get five non-answers. "It depends" is the standard line, followed by a discovery call and, weeks later, a proposal number that seems to come out of thin air. That's annoying if you're trying to budget before you've even picked a vendor.

The truth is, pricing does genuinely swing a lot based on scope. But you shouldn't have to sit through three sales calls just to get a ballpark. So here's an actual breakdown — what real projects tend to cost in India in 2026, based on the kind of work we do at Ariteck.

What actually moves the price

A few things decide whether your project lands at ₹5 lakh or ₹50 lakh:

Business logic complexity is the big one. A contact form and a multi-tenant system with role-based permissions are both "custom software," but they're not remotely the same job. Then there's integrations — every payment gateway, CRM, or SMS API you plug in adds dev time and, more importantly, testing time, because third-party APIs break in weird ways nobody warns you about.

Team size matters too. A single freelance developer is cheaper hourly but slower overall. A small team — designer, two developers, a QA person — costs more per month but ships faster with fewer bugs sneaking through. And obviously, web-only is cheaper than web plus native iOS and Android.

One thing people forget entirely: the quote you get for the build is not the full cost of owning the software. More on that below.

MVP or proof of concept: ₹4–8 lakh

This is for validating an idea before you've bet the farm on it. One core user flow, built properly, with just enough infrastructure to launch and see if anyone actually uses the thing. A single-sided marketplace. A basic SaaS dashboard. A mobile app with four or five screens, not forty.

Six to ten weeks with a lean team is realistic. If you're a founder who isn't 100% sure the idea has legs, this is where you start — spending more before you've got real user feedback is usually money wasted.

Mid-sized business application: ₹10–25 lakh

Most B2B software we build lands here — custom CRMs, inventory systems, booking platforms with payment processing, vendor portals. Multiple user roles, a real admin panel, a couple of external integrations, and a database schema someone actually thought through instead of sketched on a whiteboard the night before.

Three to five months, typically with a backend dev, a frontend dev, and QA part-time. If your team has outgrown spreadsheets or a patchwork of no-code tools bolted together with duct tape, you're probably in this bracket. Most of our custom software engineering work sits right here.

Enterprise-grade systems: ₹25–60 lakh and up

ERPs, multi-warehouse logistics platforms, anything touching regulatory compliance — healthcare, fintech, that sort of thing. These need serious architecture work before a line of code gets written. Microservices instead of a monolith, proper API design, load testing, usually a phased rollout instead of one big launch day.

Six to twelve months, sometimes longer. If you're building at this scale, it's worth reading up on API and microservices architecture too, since how the backend is structured here directly affects both what it costs and how painful (or painless) scaling later turns out to be.

Cross-platform mobile apps: ₹8–20 lakh

React Native or Flutter gets you both iOS and Android without building two separate apps from scratch — cheaper than going fully native, though not as cheap as people assume going in. Device fragmentation testing, App Store review delays, and platform quirks like biometric login or offline sync all eat into the timeline. We go into more detail on this under web and cross-platform mobile.

The cost nobody mentions upfront

Plan for roughly 15–20% of your build cost every year afterward, just for maintenance — bug fixes, security patches, small feature tweaks. Even if nothing breaks. Libraries go stale, dependencies need updating, and your own requirements will shift within the first year, almost guaranteed. Nobody budgets for this until it hits them.

Custom build or just buy something?

If an existing SaaS tool covers 80% of what you need, buy it — don't build. Custom development earns its cost when your workflow genuinely doesn't fit what off-the-shelf software assumes, when you need deep integration with systems you already run, or when the software itself is meant to be your edge, not just back-office plumbing.

FAQs

1. Is custom software development actually cheaper in India than the US or Europe?

Usually, and by a decent margin — 40–60% in most cases. That's driven by cost of living and hourly rates, not by cutting corners. Plenty of Indian teams work daily with US and European clients on the exact same stacks and standards.

2. How long does a typical project take, realistically?

MVP: 6–10 weeks. Mid-sized business app: 3–5 months. Enterprise system: 6–12 months, sometimes more if compliance or heavy integrations are involved.

3. Fixed price or hourly — which should I pick?

Fixed pricing works when your requirements are locked and unlikely to change, like a clearly scoped MVP. Hourly or monthly retainers make more sense when the product is going to keep evolving, which is most ongoing development work.

4. What's the one thing that blows budgets the most?

Scope creep, easily. A project that starts as "just a booking system" quietly grows to include payments, notifications, and a reporting dashboard nobody scoped for. Lock the MVP scope hard before development starts — it's the single biggest lever you have against overruns.
